Kristy Hoch NRSA 446 Senior Capstone 5 year career plan
1. Advanced Degrees and/or Certifications for life long learning.
Goal: To obtain BSN from Kettering College.
Plan of Action to implement goal: Enroll and complete all required courses with passing scores >80% within 6 months. I am currently enrolled in the courses needed to complete my BSN. Anticipated graduation date is May 2012. Completion of required work by the deadlines is key in fulfilling this goal. Communicating with the educators of enrolled courses is also important as well.
Goal: To complete Pediatric Advanced Life Support course within 1 year. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.
Plan of Action to implement goal: Enroll in PALS course per E.R. Department (scheduled March 2012). Study course material prior to class enrollment date and during course offering. Complete written and skills competency during the course.
Goal: Complete trauma nurse core course (TNCC) within 1.5 years.
Plan of Action to implement goal: The TNCC may be officially attended by registered nurses (RN's). In order to maximize success in the TNCC (Provider), it is recommended that the participant have at least six months of clinical nursing experience in an emergency care setting. I plan on enrolling in the course as the E.R. nurse educator states that I am eligible per department requirements.
Goal: To become a licensed certified Emergency Nurse (CEN).
Plan of Action to implement goal: A registered nurse must have a nursing license and at least two years of emergency room experience to apply for certification as a Certified Emergency Nurse Specialist. My plan is to complete my two year nurse residency at the Kettering Medical Center. I plan on buying the appropriate study guides and studying for this course after the two year commitment. I will enroll in the course and study for the material as required completing this certification. I hope to be certified in the year of 2014.
Goal: To stay current with all licensures and certifications, including registered nurse (RN), CPR, CEN, PALS, and ACLS.
Plan of Action to implement goal: To enroll and complete all requirements before licenses and certifications expire. Complete required coursework and fees.
2. Professional Organization & Political Involvement
Goal: Join work organization political committees and maintain membership with American Nurses Association (ANA) and National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).
Plan of Action to implement Goal:
Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about issues, laws, and health policy. Barriers to political activism include heavy workloads, feelings of powerlessness, time constraints, sex issues, and lack of understanding of a complex political process. I plan on joining committees within my organization and becoming involved! I have already spoken with the nurse educator at the E.R. department I am employed. She was confident in keeping me informed of committees within the department, hospital, and network needing volunteers. Keeping informed is the first step, with plans to become involved within 3 years. I really want to get some experience and education in my own beliefs before I join a committee. I also intend to pay annual memberships dues to the organization I am a member-currently ANA and
Goal: Volunteer with a campaign of cause.
Plan of Action to implement Goal: There are numerous campaigns which need support. For example, the ANA recently issued a call for volunteer nurse reviewers for the Handle with Care Recognition Program. Lack of participation makes it easier and more important now, than ever, to emerge as a leader. I plan on joining a campaign as soon as I become more informed. Within the next 2 years I will have more time to focus on political action. Currently I am consumed with school work and the new nursing job(s).
Goals: Maintain being a registered voter.
Plan of Action to implement goal:
Checking with my local city hall on how to stay current as a registered voter. Encourage friends and family to do the same. Organize a car pool to the local polling place on Election Day.
3. Developing Clinical Competence
Goal: Complete orientation competencies for the department I am employed.
Plan of Action to implement Goal: To listen and learn from my preceptor as well as other co-workers and management. Complete the required skill check-offs and orientation requirements within the 90 day orientation. I intend to ask questions to improve my understanding and increase my knowledge as an emergency nurse.
Goal: Obtain/ maintain all required certifications and licensures
Plan of Action to implement Goal: To prepare, enroll, and obtain PALS, CEN, and TNCC. Maintain BLS, ACLS, and RN certifications and licenses.
Goal: Identify normal and abnormal heart rhythms on ECG tracings, and following protocols for drug management procedures.
Plan of Action to implement Goal: To enroll and complete an ECG monitoring course. Lessons cover ECG basics, irregular rhythm interpretation, 12-lead ECG and rhythm interpretation. Although I have completed ACLS recently, I do not feel competent or confident in this area. I would like to complete this course within one year.
4. Community Service
Goal: To become involved in programs and activities that involve the community.
Plan of Action to implement Goal: Become a member of the team for community awareness events such as annual Breast Cancer Awareness 5k walk held in Kettering, Ohio and Strides Walk, which is headed through the Lions Club in Springboro, Ohio. Both of these events involve my workplace organization, hospital network, and local communities. I also like to be active so it is a win-win situation. I plan on working on this goal this year, and make it annual event. Within the five year mark I would like to be able to represent my organization (E.R. department) and recruit other individuals to support these causes. I would like the department I work in to have increased involvement and fund-raising than any other department at Kettering Medical Center.
Goal: Volunteer at community health fairs
Plan of Action to implement Goal: Volunteer my services of taking assessments, conducting screenings, and educating the public at the annual Strides walk health fair in Springboro held in October. Areas of interest are hypertension, how to recognize a heart attack vs. heartburn, and stroke awareness.
Goal: Volunteer at the Dayton chapter American Red Cross as a Health and Safety Instructor.
Plan of Action to implement Goal: A Red Cross volunteer instructor in courses such as BLS. Teaching people within the community courses such as BLS help throughout the community prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. I plan on pursuing this goal after all of the certifications and licensures of being a certified emergency nurse are complete, with a target range of in four years.
